Hi.
I am a NERD. I admit it.
Sometimes I'm a brainless twit. Sometimes I'm a dancing party maniac. And sometimes I'm psycho sugar addict. But I am ALWAYS a NERD.
But if I hear the word GEEK come out of your mouth, I will bitch slap you to Timbuktu. Why? Because I am a NERD. And to me, there's a world of difference between the two.
How do I define a nerd? Well it might help if first I define what I call a geek. I believe that geeks are a social class onto themselves: similar to the social tags like jocks or goths. They hang out primarily with each other, and really are only understood by each other (more often than not, their actions are looked upon with confusion or disbelief). They are very smart people, whether it is scientifically or even artistically. But they are socially (and often stylistically) challenged. It's not that they are weird people. It's just that they are unable to communicate their intelligence in a way that is easily understandable to the rest of the world. Which is why they only socialize with other geeks who can understand the awkward mannerisms with which they communicate. Granted, this is a very extreme version of a geek. The social awkwardness may not be as extreme, or they may even communicate with others outside of their social group. The others I refer to are usually the people I consider as nerds.
Unlike geeks, nerds are not a social class. In fact, they can be found in any and every stratosphere of society. Nerds are an equivalent to geeks, however, they are able to communicate their intelligence to the rest of society. They have ample use of their front cortices and can even communicate with geeks (due to the equal mental abilities), but they are in every social group in society. Yes you will find nerds within the social networks of geeks, but they will also be able to branch out and communicate with others in different social circles. It's like I say, when you attend an academically elite university such as mine, you know that everyone there must be a nerd - that is, if they aren't geeks ^_^. After all, you have the sports groups, the performing arts groups, and even the cultural groups within every school. And when a selection process only chooses people who are academically capable, you cannot consider all of them geeks, because they are not all socially awkward.
Why do I consider myself a nerd? Well, frankly I do things like read manga (Japanese comics), play World of Warcraft, fawn over fantasy novels and movies, I'm most definitely a band geek, and hey, I'm smart. But that isn't all I do, I like to party, I like to dance, I like to socialize and meet new and different kinds of people. All through my life I've never actually been a part of one group of friends or another. I've made friends from very different social communities. And to me that says that I can get along with very many different kinds of people - that I am not socially awkward.
There are a lot of definitions of what geeks and nerds are, and to some people they both mean one and the same. So ultimately they each need to be redefined again and again and again, to the point that their official dictionary definition cannot even be relied upon. And there definitely are ambiguities within my own definition of either word.
But yes, I call myself a nerd, and I'm proud to do so. After all, to me it's the highest compliment. Not only do you have the brains, but you also have the social dexterity to show off your intelligence.
So here's to the awkward side of me (but of course to the nerd I am) and a tribute to one very awkward and nerdy character ^_^:
